Chanukah Comes Early!

I had a over-sized surprise waiting for me in my mailbox today, a 13lb care package from PM Gear of Sparks, NV.

But what, oh what could be inside?!?!?

192 BROS!

The join the rest of my skis in what is becoming a very overcrowded dorm room!

The skis weren’t the only awesome gift of the day! A quick look at the Snowbird SnowCam and forecast revealed some treats as well…

As I sit here at the Tech Office of ASUU where I’m supposed to be doing work, I can’t help but be stoked on the fact that tomorrow I will finally get to slide on some snow!

I would like to give a HUGE THANKS! to Pat at PM Gear for hooking up this starving college student with some new sticks on which to ride this winter! Thanks PAT!

Also, big thanks to Mike G. at K2 who went out of his way to get me a screamin’ deal on some Hellbents & Obsetheds!

Thanks guys, you rock!

Icer Air: Four Years Later

Seeing as how there is currently no snow in Utah right now. Like none. Like it hasn’t snowed in weeks. Like I was skiing deep pow at this time last year. Like I’m starting to loose it. Like I’m pushing myself through the dorm hallways on my skis. Like I wake up in Snowbird’s parking lot and can’t remember how I got there or why.

Huh? But I digress. As I said, seeing as how there is no snow in Utah right now I decided to reflect on one of the many insane acts created by skiers in moments of desperation and no snow, Icer Air!

Icer Air is an event put on in San Francisco where they use snow to build stuff and other people slide on the snow and jump off of it. It’s kinda cool…sometimes…

Last week marked the fourth annual Icer Air event and clearly it has not been ‘aged to perfection’
Here’s proof.

2005: First Icer Air. US Olympic Mogul Skier, Johnny Mosley, goes crazy and decides to build a jump in San Francisco and invites a bunch of pro skiers/snowboarders. Cool Stuff. Has a very authentic feel and provides for some awesome photos.

2006: Second Icer Air. US Olympic Mogul Skier, Johnny Mosley, decides skiing isn’t cool anymore and hosts a game of jump the death gap in Pacbell/SBC/AT&T/TelecomCompaniesSuck Park. Chaos ensues, a snowboarder falls into the net of doom. Kaya Turski gets totally messed up on the landing.

Jan. 2007: I leave the Bay Area for Salt Lake City and stop going to Icer Air. Time in California slows down. People cry. My departure is mourned.

2007: Third Icer Air. US Olympic Mogul Skier, Johnny Mosley, realizes that now that I’ve left San Francisco, no one is there to man up and ski real jumps. He modifies the jump to make it safe (read: for weenies). Jon Olson throws some weird flippy spinny thing and wins some money and a funky car.

2008: Fourth Icer Air. US Olympic Mogul Skier, Johnny Mosley, forgets that he puts on this event every year until a week before. Rents the parking lot in front of the PacSBCat&t Stadium and sets up an aircraft carrier’s catapult launching system to try to kill/mame/injure athletes and charges people to watch.

2031. Several skiers who competed in the 2008 Icer Air sue US Olympic Mogul Skier Johnny Mosley for whiplash from the slingshot pully he set up 23 years before to snap people off a ski jump.

Disregarding the fact that the only cool Icer Airs were the ones I actually attended, the 2005 & 2008 looked like the most fun and most safe for athletes. Hopefully someone hits Johnny Mosley with a lead pipe and makes him fix it in ’09. Just let Jon Olson do it, he builds cool stuff.

On a completely unrelated note, I totally went biking today on the Crest trail and took a photo or two, but am currently way to lazy to go get my camera from my car. I’ll probably upload one or two tomorrow morning when I regret my decision to post to my website at 4am. That or someone breaks into my car, steals my camera and you’ll be able to view my photos on SaltLakeCarThiefs.com (please don’t actually be stupid enough to visit that url).

Seriously Ullr…Where’s the snow? Not screwing around here anymore!

We Must Defend This House!

Brace yourselves. This is going to be my first non-ski (or bike post mentioning skiing) in a very long time (note the italics on the word ‘very’, that’s like extra special effort so it means serious business).

The No. 14th ranked 11th ranked Utah Utes football team demolished Colorado State 49 to 16 today which gives them a flawless 8-0 record this season! So residents of Utah and fans of deep Cottonwood powder I implore you to join me in the next few weeks in rooting on our mighty Utes in the hopes for a perfect record this season!

In other, less awesome news it hit 70° in Salt Lake City today and there is no snow on the forecast :-|

Oh Ullr why do you tease me so? No more calm, sane waiting for snow. I shall hold ransom all arrows (why do you ski with a bow and arrow?) in the world until 36″ of perfect snow is laying on the ground for pre-season shredding. Ya, I play hardball.

^I need to prevent my website from letting me post at 4am

New Design!

As some of you noticed my site has been buggin’ out in the last couple days and that is for one reason…a new design!

The site hasn’t had any major design changes in over a year and the sidebar on the old design was starting to become too long and aesthetically unpleasing. First it’s a long sidebar, then it’s auto-playing emo music and forwarding you to myspace…

So, in order to avoid that tragic series of events I redesigned the site with a 2-column style. The new design is about 85% finished. I still need to fix some issues for IE6 users (11% of you according to my sites stats), fix the ‘Friends & Supporters’ section, modify the Pictures section, and implement my rotating banner image. Should be finished over the weekend.

If you notice anything else with the new design that is funky, please use my new contact link at the top of the page to let me know.

To thank you for bearing with the design change I present you with Theory-3′s trailer of the ’08 season…

Also…my bike is need of some TLC at the moment so the next Helmet Cast (high-rustler + longboarding footage) won’t be up till late this weekend…

Cheers,
Jake

Ya, I’m Kind of a Big Deal…

Molly and I got interviewed by Fox 13 at the top of the tram on Friday and we made the Saturday news here in SLC (and wherever else Fox 13 Utah is broadcast). So basically we’re famous…I expect we’ll be mobbed by fans wanting autographs and pictures tomorrow and I’ll try to handle it in stride…ah, the price of fame

Peep the video I grabbed from their site for Molly’s soundbite (0:38), my soundbite (0:56), and the two of us hiking down lower Dalton’s Draw (0:52).

If YouTube’s interface is too easy and simple to figure out you can suffer through MyFoxUtah’s direct page here.

Cheers and see you tomorrow!
