(Altabird 01/13-14/08) After Class Airs

The last two weeks have been a tough two for me. First school started, which always seems to turn into a scramble to iron out the perfect schedule no matter how much I plan ahead. Then I got insanely sick last week which culminated with a mind-numming fever on Sunday.

To cheer myself up I am throwing together this short trip report from monday of last week.

Enjoy.

Alta 01/13/08
Mandatory Scenic Shot.

Watch the video for dan going for some 360s off this rock.

Gotta love the low light shadow shot.

I’m just blending into everything today.

Snowbird 01/14/08
What’s the worst that could happen?

Going for it.

Dan is hard to spot in this photo, but he’s sending it.

Starting from the low dive.

Second time, testing the high dive.

Third time’s a charm.

(Snowbird 01/11/08) The Daily Grind

[audio:messagetoyou.mp3]

Snowbird has received something like three feet in the last week, which meant Adrian, Josh, and myself had to make the long, painful journey up the canyon to go plow fresh tracks so everyone else could see where to go.

It is hellish work, but we like to give back to the community.

Jumping with Jake:

Pop the takeoff:

Knees up, hands in, spot the landing:

Extend the landing gear:

Ride away:

Josh ‘Graybeard’ Matta

Adrian goes deep.

Me riding the wave.

Josh makes his mark.

Me signing the slope.

Josh finds some ‘me time’ above the ground.

Josh, “I don’t care if I land on rocks, I’m going to stomp the crap out of this.”

Adrian preparing for air time.

Mr. Plow, that’s my name, that name again is Mr. Plow.

I have trouble knowing where to go where there are no tracks in the snow.

Adrian, “Ya, I’m like a big deal.”

Adrian, showing us how its done.

Your going to have to take my word on this. I am in this photo.

My final airtime.

(Snowbird 12/30) Once Upon a Time in Gad Valley…

Okay this is my first attempt at doing perspective filming with my point-and-shoot digital camera.

Before anyone criticizes my form or balance, realize I did this with no poles, (they were strapped to my backpack) while trying to keep my camera hand level (which I failed at pretty badly).

The full run is ~7m long-

Enjoy.

(Snowbird 12/22) Deep Pow and Bad Landings

[audio:livinglovingmaid.mp3]

Blue skies, sunshine, and deep pow. That was today’s conditions at the bird. Absolutely awesome.

Me.

Dan.

LCC in all her glory.

Mineral Basin waiting game.

I managed to find some powder.

Dan headed in a more vertical direction.

It was time to make some bad decisions with Dan as a test dummy.
Me sending a cliff in Mineral Basin whose takeoff redefined sketchy.

All in all an awesome day.

(Snowbird 12/19) A Festivus for the rest of us…

[audio:fallinginlove.mp3]

People celebrate the holidays in different ways. Some people decorate a tree with lights and ornaments, while other light candles eight nights in a row.

I celebrated this holiday season by strapping 191cm planks to each of my feet and going headlong into the deep Utah snow.

Josh reminds us how to get deep.

I redefine the definition of ‘powder-skirt’.

Dan shows us how to pole plant like a champion.

My attempt at a McConkey turn.

Where’s Jake?

Dan getting deep.

Dan getting sketchy.

Dan getting air.

My response.

Josh slicing through.

Time to add my signature.

I’m ghostly white.

Josh showing off.

Dan going mute.

Me realizing that the ciruqe is much easier when you don’t touch the snow.

See ya tomorrow!

Cheers,
Jake
