Oh Crap Moment

I’m going to post more on yesterday’s lameness later, but I figured I’d upload this image now.

This is what it looks like when you ski comes off unexpectedly during a competition run.

Oh Crap Moment…

Hammer Down

Well, Day 1 of the World Freeskiing Championships just wrapped up at my home mountain of Snowbird, UT. Sunshine and temperatures of 52°F caused conditions on West Baldy (Qualifier Venue) to range from coral reef to slush. A big cut was laid down on the men competiting (19 of 55 made it to Silver Fox on Friday), but the most disappointing fact of the day was JCDC (jakecast.com …DUH) Athlete Nik Aksamit threw down the GNARLIEST line of the day and for some reason didn’t qualify.

After being nominated as one of Frankie’s favorites in the athlete meeting after today’s event (the announcer’s views on what the best lines were), Nik found himself sitting in 22nd position. This is after sending the biggest air in the gnarliest section of the venue and then straightlining the last half of the zone through huge icy moguls right into the finish. Don’t believe me yet? Just check out the World Freeskiing Tour Homepage picture from today, featuring the Aksamit sending it HUDGE into the pocket.

Close-up of Nik going huge!

Tough break buddy, we all thought you were top ten for sure. At least we can take solace in knowing that we are so gnarly that even if we don’t make the cut, we still get featured in the headline photo.

Video of Frankie’s Favorites from the athlete meeting this evening (I’m in the purple shirt and Nik has a haircut like a child molester).
Scroll to 1m 20s for the JCDC spotlight moment.

The good news is tomorrow temperatures are supposed to drop and the clouds are going to movie in, which means it won’t be variable conditions throughout the day. It’ll just be coral reef and ice all day long. I am so fucking stoked.

See you tomorrow, #16.

World Championships at the ‘Bird

Registration today. I’m running Thursday, #16th or as I like to call it ‘Prime Coral Reef Time.’ I don’t ask for a whole lot, but if it could start raining during my run (the high at Snowbird tomorrow is 52F), I’d be so pumped.

Psh. It doesn’t matter. I’ll be like Eminem in 8 Mile and just start rapping at the top of the venue. Uhh…I’m gonna get grips of style points.
…Now if only I can convince Mekhi Phifer to fly to Utah

The tree roots and bushes will just act like pillows on my landing.

I got a sickbird nomination for filling out paperwork today. Jim Jack said he’d never seen pen strokes quite like mine.

Cool videos from Friday when it actually looked like winter in Utah.

Walking Out

Bah. This was my first run today at Snowbird.
I was trying to film some cool stuff for HelmetCast 19/20. Ya, my next video is going to be two parts because that’s all the rage on indie rock message boards this days and I’m trying to appeal to appeal to punk girls in an effort to shed my already creepy reputation.

Coffee will get you out of bed, this will wake you up, and heroin is super addictive.

Absence

It’s been well over a month since I’ve posted anything on here (my longest absence since starting this blog 4 years ago) so I’m going to briefly pretend to address it and then just post cool skiing stuff.
Addressing my absence: I’m busy. I have a lot of school work. It kinda sucks. Computer science isn’t the fluffy ‘soft science’ major I was originally led to believe.
In a perfect world, I’d get to update this website everyday.
…but in a perfect world I’d also get to ski pow everyday, never have to do homework and not have to stay at least 500 yards away from Natalie Portman to avoid being arrested.
Unfortunately, this isn’t a perfect world.

Past that:
February
Telluride, CO. Stop #3 on the World Freeskiing Tour. Showed up, hit a sweet line that was a bit too pussy and ended up on the bubble for finals, but the wrong side.

On the (+) I became super famous.

Some Weird Clothing Website

Kinda cool or whatever. That pretty much covers February. I fell real bad after I got back and tore the binding out of one my skis and hurt my neck. Then I did a bunch of homework. Then it was March.

March
Kirkwood had some sweet snow, but I never really got to look at the venue for the competition due to its closure for avalanche conditions [/excuses], so I kinda screwed myself. But, I snagged a bunch of T-Shirts and got an awesome speeding ticket while driving out so it wasn’t a total loss.

Now
I’ve been shooting a bunch of sunshine skiing footage and plan to make a compilation of Little Cottonwood Canyon’s best groomed runs soon. Seriously. There will be video soon. I’m also going to try and resume making this site my priority over school work because the computer lab is boring.

Also. Nik (Pearled Barley) is weird. Audiobooks + HelmetCam footage = the future.
